Secretary Scanlan Informs Voters of Annual Checklist Verification Process Under RSA 654:39, voters who have not voted in the past five years will need to re-register before they can vote in future elections.

CONCORD, NH (April 21, 2026): Secretary of State David Scanlan informs New Hampshire voters of the annual verification of the voter checklist process required by New Hampshire law.

Under RSA 654:39, supervisors of the checklist/registrars, who are responsible for adding and removing names from their city or town’s voter checklist, must hold public sessions between April 1 and August 1 of 2026 to determine which voters on the checklist have not voted in any elections in the past five years and who have not registered since the 2024 State General Election. These voters are required to re-register if they want to remain on the voter checklist and vote in future elections.

Supervisors of the checklist must inform any voter eligible for removal, at least 30 days before removing their name from the voter checklist, that they will be removed from the checklist and need to re-register following the instructions in the letter/postcard. Supervisors of the checklist/registrars are required by law to remove these voters from the voter checklist, no earlier than June 1, even if they know a voter still lives in town. Individuals who have permanently moved out of town do not need to respond to the letter as they will be removed from the checklist.

Voters can visit app.sos.nh.gov to find their local clerk’s contact information and check their voter registration information, if they are active voters.

David Scanlan, Secretary of State: “Our local election officials work hard every day to ensure that qualified voters in their communities are given the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. I applaud their efforts and encourage all New Hampshire voters to verify their registration information is up to date.”

The State Primary Election will take place on September 8, 2026. Visitwww.sos.nh.gov/elections for more information on registering to vote.
