Are you looking for an after work/school activity that provides the following values: patience and encouragement, discipline and thoroughness, and fun?

Please consider enrolling in the New Boston Recreation Department's Karate Program which is available for ages 6 and older. This program is sponsored by the Amherst Karate School. The Amherst Karate Studio of Amherst, NH, instructs it's practitioners in the art of American Parker Kenpo Karate. During the twelve week Yellow Belt training course, you will be required to know and perform a series of basic movements ( horse stance training ), 9 self defense techniques (Partner training-5  for the 1st six week session/4 for the second ), and a " Form " ( a series of movements designed for solo practice, to practice basic Karate movements, without the distraction of a partner). At the end of each 6 week session you will be asked to demonstrate these moves, with graduates continuing for an additional six weeks here (earning a stripe on their belt ), or furthering their education at the Amherst Karate Studio* ( as a white belt equivalent or 12 week graduates earning a Yellow Belt ). Focus will be emphasized on the concepts and principles behind movements, or, the "whys" to them, as well as focused instruction of how to generate tremendous power with blocks, punches, kicks, and strikes. Some of this will be instructed forms, or solo practice, in which you will learn a series of moves to be practiced alone for development of focus, stamina, balance, and power. And yes, you will still have FUN!!!

We will recite a Student Creed in the beginning and end of class. This is an important part of the Karate experience, as it implores all participants to practice the mental side of training in the arts. Modesty, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Confidence, and an Indomitable Spirit. One that can stand up to negative peer pressure. One that has a positive outlook on life. One that has developed self-discipline to become a leader, not a follower. One that knows and understands the importance of respect, for oneself and others. And one that understands that true growth comes from what they contribute, not what they take.

Quotable Quote: "The ultimate aim of karate-do lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants." - Gichin Funakoshi
